God and the GPS

Your   word  is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105 The other day I had the privilege of driving to the airport to pick up my daughter.  After picking her up, we decided to stop and get something to eat.  So on the way home we spotted the golden arches standing boldly, proudly above the trees a short distance off the interstate.  We took the exit and headed in the direction of McDonald's.  This would have worked if the road led straight to McDonald's, but it didn't.  We set the GPS, and I turned in what appeared to be the direction of our goal. Nope, instead of McDonald's we ended up circling a bank.  Now, the two in the back seat are spitting out directions as well as the G PS. At this point, my brain stopped listening because there were too many voices.  I made another turn.  This time I ended up circling a costume store.  Finally, in desperation, I gave up thinking I was smarter than the satellite; I realiz...

What if's

But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not  fear  their threats; do not be frightened.  1 Peter 3:14 How many of you, like me, suffer from a chronic case of the “what if’s”.  Even though I love to travel, until about a year ago the longest distance I had driven is about forty-five minutes away because the “what if’s” would take over.  Every time I would start thinking of going someplace that would require driving, my mind would immediately start; “what if” you get lost; “what if” you have an accident; or “what if” your car breaks down?  Until I decided that I was not listening the “what if” voices, I didn't Sunset in South Carolina realize how much I had let the fear of the unknowns hold me back from doing some things I would have loved.  I was afraid to take chances because; what if I’m wrong; What if something bad happens ; What if….. Sometimes I am afraid that we let that carry over into our spiritual life, as...

Ask,Listen ,Do

Today as I was thinking of the last few years and what I've been learning about trusting God and listening to him.  Three years ago I was about seventy, that’s right 70, pounds heavier.  I didn't start out that way, none of us do, but somewhere in my late twenties and thirties I developed poor eating habits.  The problem was that if you asked me I would tell you my eating was normal and even healthy.    About three years ago I realized I was approaching the big 5 0, and if I didn't want to be overweight the rest of my life, something had to change.  I told God I needed his help and that I would do whatever he showed me to do.  Little by little he showed me things that I needed to change; I would change them.  Now three years and seventy pounds later I realize that:  I had to admit, to myself and to God that my own ways were not working.  Often, I’m guilty of doing the same thing over and over even if it’s not working.  In my own sim...
