Not Just The Big Things

6 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—

It was cold  freezing,  but I HAD to get to the bank and some other errands to complete otherwise I might not have even ventured outside.  We, Abby and I, got started.  We made our first stop at the post office.  It was there that I made my discovery;  I had forgotten a check that needed to go to the bank, eeeps.  We popped a u-ie and returned home toget the check.  I shut the car off ran in the house, grabbed the check, ran back to the car and turned the key….. nothing.  No click, no engine sound, nothing the car was dead.  I came back in and informed my darling husband that the car was not starting.  By now I’m getting annoyed. While he was getting shoes on, he asked, “Did you check the battery cables?”  To which. I replied, “Ummm no.”   Now I felt a little foolish.  I should have thought to verify that.  I went back checked the cable, and sure enough it was loose.  I adjusted it and tada the engine turned over, and we were on our way again.  I got to the bank opened the envelope containing the check to discover that there was no check.  I grabbed the wrong envelope.  At this point, I. felt like I was living something from “Alexander’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Verry Bad Day.”.  I went back to the car, you guessed it, the car is not starting again.  After again adjusting the cables, I decided to stop at a place where they sell car parts.  They install batteries; perhaps they could fix the cables too.  I mean, how hard can it be, right?  The lovely lady said, “We can’t put them on for you.” Then  she said something crazy, “You can but them and put them on yourself.”  Really?  I know very little about cars although I could probably google and figure it out.  Aside from that it is in the single digits out.  I WOULD FREEZE.  Aside from that, I felt like it might be premature to go ahead and buy them, nothing big just a reluctance.  I left and called the mechanic.  He said he had a few minutes, and I should bring the car over.  I did and on the way to the garage, I lamented that this was going to cost $45-50 for about 5 to 10 minutes of work.  The mechanic worked on the car for about 5 minutes  and when he was done said, “You didn’t need new cables.  You just needed to clean them off.”  I will remember that in the future.  Imagine if I had bought battery cables.  I would have wasted money since there was nothing wrong with the old ones.  I am incredibly glad and always amazed that the God of the universe sent us a counselor.  Someone to whisper the right things in our ear or give us an instinct, gut feeling, which goes contrary to our ordinary actions.  It always amazes me that the God of the universe is so intimately involved in the life of the believer.  Praise God!  Yes, it was a small thing  that is even more amazing;  He was not protecting me from a major catastrophe just guiding me in a daily life situation.  He is not just concerned with huge things but also with the insignificant small things in my life.

Live Fearlessly

As I was driving home today, I passed a person walking on the side of the    road.  Since it was cold, and snowy, I thought I should stop and offer the person a ride.  As I drove on by, I was irritated with myself for not stopping.  I could have and should have but I didn't. Why?  I was scared! Maybe that wouldn't bother you, but I'm willing to bet there are things that make you afraid.  It may be snakes or spiders that send the ticker into  overdrive.  Or maybe it's your job and finances that keep you up at night when you should be resting.  Then again perhaps it's relationships that consume your thoughts and energy.  As followers of God, we know that we are told not to be afraid.  Yet we often are afraid despite everything we know.   As I was driving away from a missed opportunity, I began thinking about what it is that makes us afraid.  I honestly am not sure what it is that causes us to be afraid when we should be bold, but I

Tragedy: A Christian Response

I want to start by telling you a story.  We were new parents.  When Our oldest, a son, was about eighteen to twenty months we had another baby, a girl with brown hair and huge eyes.   One day as I went to feed her, my son who may have been two at the time wandered off to another part of the house.  The next thing I heard was a thud.  I grabbed my baby girl and ran to see what happened.  There was my son with a table on top of him.  He had pulled it over on himself and more blood than I had ever seen was running all over.   We put him in the car and dashed for the ER.  It was not a fun trip. He had a skull fracture and many stitches.  Fast forward about fourteen or fifteen years, I’m at a stop light and watch my youngest daughter about ten start across a street on a bike start across a street just as a truck comes around a corner into the path of the bike.  She hit the side of the truck and bounced onto the road.   I grabbed her up and checked her over there were no injuries, but

Just A Word of Praise!!

On Sunday, after church, we went to a town about thirty minutes away.   On the way we drove through an area where they were working on the road.  It was no big deal.  We had lunch, bought some food for the week, and drove back home.    Later, as we were on our way to church for the evening service, I heard the ominous flapping sound that a tire makes when it’s flat.  Yikes!  I pulled over and while I was debating how I was going to change a tire.  A car coming in the opposite direction drove by and stopped.   As the driver appeared from the vehicle, I recognized him as a neighbor and fellow believer.  He approached the car, and asked if I had an air compressor to inflate the tire.  My answer, “Yes, but I’m not sure how good it is.  I’ve never actually managed to inflate a tire using it. I may not be using it properly.”   I produced it from the trunk of the car and handed it to him.  Within a few minutes, he had it hooked up and running.   As it turned out, I was using it properly,
