“I’m just a yellow light, no one listens to me.” We read this and smile because we've all been
the yellow light that gets ignored.
Most, if not all of us, long to be the red light or the green light
because they seem significant. We all,
at some point in our life, are searching for significance. Yet, somehow, it eludes us. I know some of
you right now are going to give me the “Sunday School” answer that we find our
significance in God, and you are correct.
So, why do we struggle with this?
I’m not a psychologist, so I might be wrong, but I think we struggle
with this because what we really desire is affirmation and love. We want to know that others see us and what
we do as having value. I know that there are probably a myriad of reasons for
why we need that confirmation from others, but, in my opinion, the biggest
reason is that we were created by God for love.
There is a longing in each of us to love and be loved that can only be
filled by God first and then by others.
The problem is that we live in a broken world where people often put
conditions on love. I love you if…., or
I love you because…; so we struggle to find significance. Friend if you are struggling, be assured that
you are not alone in your struggle. I
want you to hang in there. You may not
know the full impact of your life till the final chapter is written, and you
get to heaven. So until the final
chapter is written hang on you may be shocked at the importance of the
unimportant. If you aren't struggling
right now, awesome! Look for someone who is and be the one to affirm them. Your affirmation may be just that they need
to keep hanging on.
I’d like to tell you about a lady I visited yesterday. She is ninety-five years young. She recently moved into nursing home. She asked one of the workers how many times she would have to walk around the outside of the building in order to walk a mile. She said the person told her about ten. Then she leaned in really close and whispered, “I walked around twelve just to be sure I walked a mile.” Hahahaha! What a lady! She loves to keep active, even in a nursing home. As we talked, I saw no anger or bitterness in her speech or actions. There was only a love for God, a heart of compassion, and a sense of humor. She has befriended the one "prickly pear" at the home because as she said, “I have to love her, so she knows Jesus loves her too.” Wow!!! I need to live like that! I want to show that much compassion for those around me that need Jesus. She loved to talk about God and what he was teaching her. ...
